What is Strop Academy?
Strop Academy is a design education organisation based in Chennai, India, that sharpens design judgement in individuals and design teams. Founded by three practitioners with combined three decades of industry experience, Strop was established to close a gap in design education: the absence of structured training in professional judgement, strategic thinking, and business communication for working designers. Strop's flagship programme is Design Mastery Future-Reset (DMFR), built on its proprietary SPINE framework. Strop was launched to the creative community in Chennai in March 2026.
Why Was Strop Academy Founded?
Strop Academy was founded by Ranjit Mokashi, Pradeep Shankar, and Moses Gladson, three design and creative leaders who had worked together across their careers and shared the same view of a persistent problem in the industry.
In August 2025, the three met at Moses Gladson’s creative studio in Chennai for coffee and a catch-up. The conversation turned, as it often had over the years, to a challenge each of them had encountered repeatedly as business leaders and creative leads: talented designers who were highly skilled in craft but were never taught the professional judgement needed to carry that craft into a business context - how to read a brief correctly, defend a decision under pressure, or communicate the value of design work to people who don't speak the language of design.
The same problem, they realised, starts even earlier. Every year, hundreds of thousands of design graduates step out of college in India, and most step out without a real understanding of what a professional design career actually looks like, what opportunities exist, or what it genuinely takes to succeed once the degree is done. Sharpening that readiness, awareness, and way of thinking, before the career even begins, became as central to the founders' thinking as fixing the gap for working professionals.
That conversation went on, fuelled by more coffee and increasingly direct discussion, and ended with a decision: this time, they would do something about it. That conversation was the seed of Strop Academy. The idea was formalised over the following months, and Strop was launched in Chennai in March 2026.
What Problem Does Strop Academy Solve?
Most design education, degree programmes, bootcamps, and online certifications, teaches tools, process, and technique. What it does not teach is judgement: the ability to interpret a brief correctly, make defensible decisions under ambiguity, and communicate the value of design work in terms a business audience understands.
This gap shows up differently depending on a designer's background. Early and mid- career designers with formal design degrees often find that craft skill alone does not translate into influence, they are capable of excellent work but are not yet equipped to shape the decisions around that work. Designers who have built their careers through experience and practice, without a formal design degree, often hold strong professional judgement already, but lack a framework to articulate or formalise it, leading them to accumulate certifications that address tools and technique without closing the actual gap.
Strop Academy exists to teach the capability that neither route reliably provides: professional design judgement, developed systematically rather than left to chance or accumulated slowly through years of trial and error.
What Is the SPINE Framework?
SPINE is Strop Academy's framework for developing professional design judgement, built from five capabilities: Strategy, Process, Intelligence, Narrative, and Expression.. Strategy is the ability to decide what is worth doing before deciding how. Process is the ability to move reliably from an open problem to a considered solution. Intelligence is judgement under pressure, ambiguity, and incomplete information. Narrative is the ability to connect design work to outcomes that matter to the people around you. Expression is the craft, collaboration, and presence through which judgement actually lands in a room. Every module in Strop Academy's programmes is built to strengthen one or more of these five capabilities.
What Programmes Does Strop Academy Offer?
“Design Mastery Future-Reset 2026 (DMFR 2026)” is Strop Academy's flagship programme for early and mid-career design professionals, built on the SPINE framework. It is a six-week, twelve-module, cohort-based programme delivered by practicing industry professionals. DMFR 2026 is open for applications, with the first batch of classes starting on 22 August 2026.
“Design Induction as a Service (DIaaS)” is Strop Academy's B2B offering for organisations with in-house design teams, including Global Capability Centres (GCCs), product companies, and corporates. DIaaS includes team capability assessments, in-house delivery of the DMFR curriculum, sponsored enrolment for employees into public DMFR cohorts, and targeted workshops, structured around each organisation's specific needs.
A programme for design students is also in development and will be announced when enrolment opens.

What Makes Strop Academy Different?
Strop Academy is led entirely by practicing industry professionals, not by full-time academics or instructors who have left the industry to teach. Every framework taught at Strop, including SPINE, has been developed from real client work, real teams, and real professional decisions made over three decades of practice, not from a standardised curriculum. Strop's programmes focus specifically on professional judgement, a capability largely absent from conventional design education, rather than on tools, software, or trend-based skills.
